Fellow surfers used their board leashes as tourniquets to stem the bleeding and possibly save his life, said Honolulu Ocean Safety.
The victim’s children, daughter Keani and son Kamu, thanked the nearby surfers and first responders for their quick actions to save their dad.
Mike Morita, a 58-year-old surfing aficionado, lost his right foot in a shark attack off the coast of Honolulu, Hawaii.“His spirits are high and he has accepted his injury. He is embracing the challenges that he will face ahead and with God, his family, and his friends by his side he will remain positive and get through this,” the children wrote.
“I saw the board, and I said, ‘Oh my God! Wow!’ because he’s so close to Ala Moana and that this moment there’s so many people on the beach,” surfer Felipe Trujillo told the news outlet about the incident. According to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, the last shark attack in Kewalos took place in 2002.“It’s right at the mouth of the Ala Wai Canal, so all the water that runs down the mountains and feeds into the Ala Wai was being flushed down there,” Waikiki Aquarium Director Andrew Rossiter told the news station.
