The defendant told police he was mad at the victim for urinating all over their shared living space.
OAKLAND — A Hayward man received 13 years in state prison for killing his roommate in a senior living home, in a dispute over their shared living conditions, court records show.
John Willis, 50, pleaded no contest to manslaughter in the October 2019 beating death of 75-year-old Jerrill Timmons. The two were living together at Hayward Haven Independent Living on Flint Court when Willis attacked Timmons in the room they shared. According to police testimony, officers found Timmons lying naked between the two men’s beds, suffering from blunt force trauma injuries and damage to his carotid artery, which allows bloodflow to the brain. Willis later told police he put Timmons in a wrestling chokehold he remembered from high school, and that he intended to kill him.
The motive, Hayward police investigators testified, had to do with Willis “feeling disrespected” because Timmons was urinating on his personal clothing. Willis reportedly claimed he attempted to break Timmons’ neck. When that didn’t work, he said, he forced him to the ground and stomped on his head.
