Moto GP: Francesco Bagnaia has held off Martin to claim his eighth win of the Moto GP season in Japan.

By winning for the 10th time in 16 Moto3 races this season in Japan last Sunday, 18-year-old Colombian David Alonso secured the 2024 world title with four rounds to spare. It’s dominance on a historic level, yet a stronghold that makes little sense given how the world championship ’s entry-level class might be the most level playing field of them all.

If you’re judging a rider’s potential by the company he keeps, Alonso’s is off the scale. A 14-time Moto3 race-winner – nobody has won more races since the category superseded the 125cc class in 2012 – Alonso is one of just five riders in the history of the world championship to take 10 or more wins in one lightweight-class season.

It’s a trait that, combined with his riding style, has turned the final laps of races this season from lotteries to near certainties, as MotoGP pit lane TV reporter Jack Appleyard sees it. When Alonso returned to the pits before the podium ceremony at Motegi, both Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia emerged from their garages to high-five the jubilant teenager.

MotoGP’s reigning double world champion laughed when recalling Alonso’s thirst for information, and how that sets him apart. In Japan, as a montage of his championship-winning season was being played out on the video screens trackside, a pocket bike from his first racing days made an appearance, Alonso giddily riding it around in circles.
