A prominent Muslim community leader has reiterated his support for Tony Burke as MP for Watson, declaring the Home Affairs Minister has done a “great deal” for the local community which he can continue successfully advocating for in his new cabinet position.

Picture: NCA NewsWire / Martin Ollman Mr Burke will face a challenge from independent Dr Ziad Basyouny, a doctor who has worked in western Sydney for many years, after he formally announced his campaign on Tuesday. Dr Rifi pointed to the prominent cabinet position the Watson MP now held and compared it to how a newly elected independent would instead be sitting on the backbench.
