A man who shook a five-month-old baby so hard the tot has been left with lifelong injuries has been jailed for four years and four months.
Afzal didn't admit what he had done and went with the baby's mum to buy Calpol from the chemist. He called an ambulance but again did not mention the trauma the baby had suffered. On October 16 the child's mum noticed the youngster's limbs were twitching as though the baby was having a fit and took the child to Royal Blackburn Hospital. A CT scan showed the tot had bleeding to both sides of their brain and injuries to their optic nerve.
"He let me go through a week not knowing what was wrong with them when [the baby] was so poorly. He knew what he had done. If he had said what he had done, perhaps the injuries wouldn't have been so bad and would have been treated earlier. She said she has also suffered and recently left a job in a career she wanted as she could not bear to be apart from her child. "I have had social workers and police involved in my family for three years. All I ever wanted was for Qasim to admit what he did. Now he has it feels hollow", she said.
Sentencing, the judge said: "The baby's mother says the defendant shows no remorse and I agree. At the time the child needed medical assistance he chose to say nothing. While the child's mother was under scrutiny from social services he allowed that to continue. It is clear he only pleaded guilty when the evidence made it clear he was going to lose his trial.
