Health gap fees up to 10 times higher in northern Sydney than elsewhere in NSW | Nigelgladstone rachelclun
Private health insurance gap fees are up to 10 times larger in northern Sydney than elsewhere in the state, the federal government's new fee transparency website shows.
Out of pocket costs for a hip replacement, on average, are about $3500 in northern and eastern Sydney, with less than 15 per cent of patients paying no gap last year. The same procedure on the Central Coast had average gap fees of $500 and almost half of all patients paid no gap, the federal government's new fee transparency website shows.
Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists president Vijay Roach said the majority of doctors charged reasonable fees and "should not have their reputation unfairly maligned”. "Private health insurance company profits seem to be quite healthy and they’re pushing down on all costs - prosthesis costs, private hospital costs and they're pushing down on surgeons' costs," he said.
