A Brisbane bus driver is believed to have suffered a medical episode before mounting the kerb at peak hour. Some pedestrians were unable to get out of the way.
A young woman has died after being pinned against a wall by a council bus that lost control on Edward Street and mounted a busy footpath during peak hour. The pedestrian was critically injured in the crash late on Friday afternoon and unable to be saved by paramedics.
She was pinned by the Brisbane City Council bus and died at the scene.Nine News Several other pedestrians and bus passengers were taken to hospital, and that section of Edward Street was closed well into the evening as the scene was cleared and police started their investigations. A council spokesman said the bus driver, servicing route 185, was believed to have suffered a medical incident after turning the corner from Ann Street. Shortly after 5pm, the bus mounted the kerb, hitting pedestrians before coming to a halt in the ANZAC Square Arcade building.At that time of day, the footpath was busy with end-of-week pedestrians, many bound for Central train station just across Ann Street.Advertisement Senior Sergeant Steve Watterson said “the bus has made a left turn from Ann into Edward and for reasons under investigation at this point in time … it deviated left onto the footpath”. “We were lucky at the time there only nine passengers on the bus with three sustaining minor cuts and bruising as a result of the impact and exiting the bus through some emergency windows,” Watterson told media at the scene. “We’ve reviewed some CCTV footage … it’s a very busy time of the afternoon and our thoughts go out to the family of the person.”“Hearing this news has absolutely shocked me and I’m sure the entire Brisbane community will be feeling this tonight,” Schrinner said.“While we do not yet know the exact circumstances of what has happened, council will be working with Queensland Police Service who will investigate this heartbreaking incident.”The street and damaged building would need to be made safe for pedestrians and motorists before being reopened.
