Italy's Prime Minister and sports icons around the world have weighed in after Italian boxer Angela Carini ended an Olympics fight just 46 seconds in, following a powerful knock to the face from Algeria’s Imane Khelif, who failed a gender verification test last year.

Athletes across the globe have reacted after Italian boxer Angela Carini called an end to an Olympics fight after 46 seconds, following a heavy right hand to the face from Algeria’s Imane Khelif , who failed a gender eligibility test last year.

Khelif was disqualified from last year’s World Championships following a gender verification test, which found she had XY chromosomes. "In contrast to the reports that have been circulating, the Algerian athlete Imane Khelif is not a trans woman," Coco told the news agency. “Athletes who have male genetic characteristics should not be admitted to women’s competitions. Not because we want to discriminate against anyone, but in order to protect the right of female athletes to be able to compete on equal terms,” Prime Minister Meloni said.“But then it also matters to be able to compete on equal grounds and from my point of view it was not an even contest.”“This is a travesty. Doesn’t matter what you believe. This is wrong and dangerous," he wrote on X.
