The recent hot spell may feel unfamiliar, but weather extremes are quickly becoming the norm, as climate change up-ends the winter seasons.

"What's been really remarkable is when we had the cold spell a few weeks ago, we did break one or two temperature records," he said."That really points to the fact that it's much easier to break hot temperature records because we've warmed the planet so much over the last century."The Bureau of Meteorology reveals which places lay claim to being Australia's coldest.
This map shows how much higher maximum temperatures were last week compared to the long-term average maximums."We're getting more winter heat waves and fewer winter cold spells, so even without doing a full analysis on this particular extreme event, we can already say that climate change is increasing the likelihood of seeing this kind of event," he said.
The impact is being felt particularly hard in Australia's alpine regions, where ski seasons are becoming shorter and the snow pack is suffering.
