Selinger says her interest in the trades was sparked in a high school class. She liked working with her hands and took auto mechanics all throughmillwright and she decided to pursue“I never really had anyone tell me I can’t. I mean, not directly anyways — I’m sure they thought it,” she jokes. She did a four-year apprenticeship, making money every year, while technically being in “training.” Selinger is now 23 years old, with a full career ahead of her.

His focus is on how to train skilled workers when it’s unclear what business will be like in six months to two years.Article content Companies have a hard time filling those positions, but he thinks it’s going to get worse as demand increases, which willHe anticipates a shortfall of 9,000 to 10,000 workers over that rough time period. The hardest positions for employers to fill are entry level jobs, he notes.

In the short term, he thinks one of the best bets is the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program, which fast-tracks immigration to Canada. Many of its participants stuck around through the economic crunch into the boom, Cooper says.
