COVID-19 cases in NSW will continue to climb unless the reproductive rate of the outbreak decreases, as the Chief Health Officer warns the state is “here for the long haul”.
In an infectious diseases outbreak, the reproduction rate is the average number of people each infected person goes on to infect. So at a reproduction number of 1.3, every 10 people who test positive to COVID-19 will collectively infect another 13 people. “At the start of an outbreak you always see a huge, steep rise in cases which causes a very high R eff which eventually settles down,” Professor Esterman said.“Until that happens, cases are going to continue to grow exponentially,” Professor Esterman said.
However, the state has certainly pushed ahead of its own 6 million shot target for the end of August, reporting a total number of 6,019,355 doses administered across state hubs, GP clinics and other providers by 8pm Monday.
