Happy Valentine’s Day to those who celebrate, whether you be lovers, people with epilepsy, or beekeepers .
Like most happy couples, my wife and I are reasonably certain that we are the best, most stable couple of all time. Lockdowns have only brought us closer, and after 10 years together, I still have to pinch myself sometimes to believe that I really get to spend every day with my best friend, and that she loves me back.
We do everything together. It’s like one of those happy Taylor Swift songs, or that one end-game couple from a romantic comedy, only we’re in our 30s and have never once had to stop the other from getting on a plane.Istock Recently, a colleague asked me what the secret to a happy marriage is. Their guess was shared interests, but that’s not the case, or not at first, anyway. When we first met, I was an insufferable comic book nerd with a love of technology and minimal interest in going to fancy restaurants. She didn’t see the point of owning a smartphone and lived for food. But over time, we grew to love the things the other one loved because it made them happy, and joy is a shared emotion in a good marriage.
Of course, this does require both partners to actually take responsibility for cleaning and not just hope the smells will eventually trick the other into taking over their chores.But if you do have access to this luxury, then this is the secret I have for you: share every part of yourself with the one you love, except your bathroom.
