What is it like to receive a lung transplant?

When a COVID survivor's lungs are permenantly damaged, it's not just medical decisions that decide whether they get a transplantThe pandemic has led to a growing number of young people who need a lung transplant to survive. By the end of 2021, 282 COVID patients across the nation received new lungs, including 19 at Houston Methodist Hospital.

It’s not just a physical evaluation. Financial advisers and social workers open a case to determine whether patients have insurance and a sufficient number of caregivers who can help the patient recover at home. The transplant team will only accept a donor who is compatible with the patient’s blood type, tissue type and chest size. The decision also depends on the proximity of the donor hospital and the condition of the lungs.

The surgery takes 4 to 8 hours, but COVID patients tend to have more severe lung damage that prolongs the operation.
