The Matildas are in a great spot heading into an Olympic qualifier against Uzbekistan after topping their group, and now the search is on for a stadium big enough that isn't hosting a global pop star at the same time.
The Matildas are through to the third and final stage of qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games after winning three straight games in Perth.
Meanwhile, in Tashkent, while Japan remained perfect to top Group C, Uzbekistan's 3-0 win over India gave it a second victory from three matches. Two wins obviously gets you over the line, but if the games are split 1-1 it comes down to an aggregate score. And if it's still even after that, we get extra time and penalties a la the Socceroos' 2005 shootout against Uruguay to reach the men's World Cup.The Matildas will be overwhelming favourites when they go up against Uzbekistan, which has never reached the Women's World Cup or Olympic Games.
After the repeated sell-outs at the Women's World Cup, Football Australia moved the second of their three games in Perth to the city's 60,000-seat AFL ground, which was also a full house. "As soon as we have confirmation of what the match day is we'll be looking for the biggest stadiums available for the Matildas to play in," he said.
