Hero Blackpool dad who saved two boys from the sea took his own life after spiralling drug debts

A Blackpool dad who was hailed as a hero for saving the lives of two young boys tragically died after being hit by a train.

An inquest at Blackpool Town Hall today heard that the Northern Rail train which struck Ollie had left Blackpool North at 2.58pm on the afternoon of Tuesday May 24. At 3.05pm the driver was passing through Layton, at 60mph, when he saw Ollie jump down from the platform. CCTV footage from inside the driver's cab was later viewed by Derek Woolley, fatalities investigator for British Transport Police, who concluded that 'it was very clear it was a deliberate act'. Ollie's injuries, described as unsurvivable, were consistent with being struck by a train.

When Ollie's family discovered he had been taking drugs his behaviour 'began to make sense'. "Him taking drugs explained so much to me such as the borrowing money sometimes on a Wednesday when he had only been paid on the Monday," his mum added. Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust, which runs mental health services, carried out a review following Ollie's death. The review concluded that the decision not to detain Ollie had been correct. The inquest heard that detaining someone under the Mental Health Act, which is also referred to as sectioning, can only be done when someone is deemed to not have capacity to make their own decisions or can only be treated in a hospital setting.
