Over 9 people are dead and thousands injured after Hezbollah pagers detonated across Lebanon in a series of blasts. The attacks, attributed to Israel by some experts, have raised concerns about escalating regional tensions and the potential for wider conflict.
At least nine people have been killed and about 2,800 injured after pagers used for communication by the militant group Hezbollah exploded in a series of blasts across Lebanon , according to local authorities.who is a former advisor to Lebanon 's minister of Labor, says the scope and gravity of Tuesday's attacks have serious implications for regional stability.
"It is a moment of reckoning for Hezbollah. Lebanon doesn't have the capability to sustain a war similar to that of 2006." Safadi also reiterated Jordan's support for "Lebanon's security, sovereignty and stability," the statement read. Speaking to reporters in Parliament House this morning, he said the pager explosions highlight the dangers of insecurity in the supply chain.
Lufthansa will also suspend all flights to Tel Aviv and Tehran through to Thursday, citing the "recent change in the security situation".During this period, the Israeli and Iranian airspace will also be bypassed by all Lufthansa Group Airlines. The United Nations' special coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, deplored the attack in a statement, saying it "marked an extremely concerning situation".
The pagers that exploded on Tuesday could have been from the new batch of communication devices acquired by Hezbollah members three months ago. Unlike mobile phones, pagers work on radio waves — the operator can send a message by radio frequency rather than the internet. "There are reports in Arab media that Israel has somehow managed to infiltrate the supply line of these pagers and plant little explosive devices on the batteries before they were delivered to Hezbollah ," Allyson Horn said.Horn says the blasts are being seen as a significant escalation in amidst already heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
