High number of steering failures involving new Manly ferries revealed | Mattonews

The extent of defects plaguing three new Manly passenger ferries has been revealed in internal government data that shows they have suffered at least a dozen steering failures over the past year.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has confirmed that one of those six vessels – the Catherine Hamlin – had a steering failure a week ago. “There is nothing more important across our entire transport system than the safety of passengers and crew. Safety issues and defects should never be covered up,” she said.Transdev, which operates the government-owned ferries, said it had “robust internal safety reporting”, and technicians were still investigating the root cause of the Fairlight’s steering failure two weeks ago.

The Balmoral was pulled from service for most of last week after the union raised concerns that the vessel had not undergone a risk assessment. However, Transdev said the vessel returned to service late on Friday after extra engineering controls were put in place, despite a risk assessment and sea trials last week finding no equipment failure.
