The current record pollen counts hitting parts of Australia including Brisbane and Canberra are a serious health risk, and people should take sensible precautions.

A leading allergy expert says taking care of your immune system is key to dealing with one of the worst pollen spikes on record currently hitting many parts of the country.

Associate Professor Severine Navarro, an immunologist from the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, said the effect of pollen allergies was cumulative, meaning it often got worse over a person’s lifetime. Navarro said because of that, some people found that even pharmaceutical treatments for allergies such as antihistamines and corticosteroids had progressively less usefulness in reducing symptoms, although they were still helpful for many people.Navarro heads the Mucosal Immunology Research Group at QIMR Berghofer with her research focusing on the use of parasites such as hookworm to develop new treatments for allergic reactions.

It’s believed the recent wet weather is the cause of the pollen spike, with the persistent rain over the summer months causing much more plant growth than usual, leading to a spike in pollen during what should be a period when plant growth is slowing as the weather becomes cooler and drier.
