Higher prices for water in drought 'will hurt renters and large families' | juliepower
Critics of a proposal to charge Sydney residents more for water in times of drought say the idea will hurt larger families and renters.
Instead of the flat rate of $2.11 per kilolitre , IPART proposes an "average weather" price of $2.30 per KL when dams are full. When dams fall below 60 per cent, Sydney Water would charge a higher "drought" price of $3.12 per KL.This model has been endorsed by many economists, who argue Sydney water has long been undervalued.
"It is important to conserve water and reduce excess consumption," Ms Young said. Using price fluctuations would "adversely impact vulnerable customers" while providing "no incentive" for more affluent households with disposable income to use less.
