An overnight crash of at least six cars on Highway 101 killed three, injured five and delayed traffic for hours.
A major chain-reaction crash on Highway 101 in Sunnyvale early Monday morning left three people dead and five others injured.
The accident began when a Ford pickup truck hit the center median while traveling northbound just south of Fair Oaks just after midnight on Monday, California Highway Patrol Officer Ross Lee told the San Francisco Examiner. It was unclear why the driver lost control of the truck. The initial crash triggered a chain reaction that caused the deaths.
“One vehicle collided with the truck, a third vehicle in the sequence collided with that vehicle and so on,” Lee said. “At some point, drivers from three of the vehicles exited their vehicles and were standing in the proximity of the crash scene when a fifth vehicle came and collided at some point with this crash scene, striking the three occupants who had gotten out of their vehicles.
