Queensland frontline health workers are going beyond public health directions to protect themselves and their families from COVID-19's highly transmissible Omicron variant, as personal responsibility becomes the new mantra of the pandemic.

Wearing a mask as often as possible is also suggestedEmergency physician Kim Hansen said she would have liked to have taken her family to a Christmas concert this week, but they were now avoiding large gatherings.

When his family gathers with friends, they also meet outdoors if they can, as part of a proactive approach to the pandemic."I had a catch-up with friends yesterday, we made sure we sat outside for that, the most ventilated part of the venue, and as far away from anyone else as practically possible," said Dr Griffin, the director of infectious diseases at Mater Health Services.

"We thought that if we were all exposed simultaneously, it would have a big impact on what's happening, so we elected to cancel," Dr Griffin said. Griffith University senior lecturer in infection prevention and control Peta-Anne Zimmerman said she was wearing masks more than what was required.
