‘I love it’: Worshippers are joyfully returning to churches this Easter, after COVID-19 restrictions forced 2020 services to go online.

A crowd streamed into Festival Hall on Friday but they weren’t there to watch rock music. There was a band, but it played soft contemporary Christian songs. The “fans” present were not worshipping guitar gods, but a higher power.

Hillsong member Dorcas Quah, 41, of Burwood, attended on Friday with husband Jeremy, 41, and their five children aged 3 to 12, greeting friends and expressing their faith after a challenging year. But he said last year also brought more followers to the church due to opportunities to watch services on television and online.

Dr Loewe said the 6.30am service, including lighting an Easter candle outside, was “a good metaphor of what we are going through as a community”.
