We want high achievers and happy readers.
Mike Miles, HISD superintendent of schools, speaks during a news conference at HISD’s Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 in Houston. At last week's meeting of Houston ISD's new board of managers, the public pushback against the recently named superintendent overseeing the takeover by the Texas Education Agency was fierce.
We're hopeful that Thursday's meeting will go better. Considering the packed agenda, community members should begin to see both the superintendent's and the board of managers' priorities in action."If we can't get achievement results, you should fire me,"We'll put aside the fact that Houston residents didn't hire Miles and we certainly can't fire him. His statement otherwise seems bold, clear, even reassuring.
What constitutes achievement? What"results" really matter? What measurements are fair and accurate? Can everything that's good for HISD students really be measured? These are the questions we're asking ourselves as we continue to evaluate Miles' approach, and ultimately, his performance. We don't have all the answers but we have some.
Take standardized test scores. Miles has evidence that his teaching-focused, no-excuses approach at Dallas ISD and the Third Future Schools charter network contributed to rising test scores. There are caveats, though.
