The sub shop was operated by the same man for over 45 years. It changed hands in 2022, then closed in 2023.
Dominick Oliverie was last involved in Great American Hero in 2021, though he founded it about 45 years prior. "I worked real hard at this," he said when he found out the Hero had closed. "We had so much fun there."
After Oliverie sold the business on Jan. 1, 2022, he says he offered to help the new owners for free, but they didn’t take him up on it. Cox and Wilson had ambitions ofthat could compete with big-brand sub shops like Jersey Mike’s and Jimmy John’s. It isn’t clear what could happen next with Great American Hero, if anything.
Former general manager Arturo Mendoza says the company “didn’t have the same vision” once it moved to the new location. He worked for the company from 2017 until February 2023, for both sets of owners.“There was a lack of supervision,” he says of his last few months at the company. “At the end of the day, it was just not the same.”, a breakfast shop that originated near Southern Methodist University.
