Dr. William Gonzaba received an engineer’s estimate that it would cost nearly $1 million to repair the front portion of a historic landmark house he purchased in 2017 that was damaged by fire the following year. A city panel agreed to support demolition of the structure, once Gonzaba’s team returns with a better plan to redevelop the site at 615 Augusta St. in the northern downtown area.
“I just don’t see that as … good urban planning,” said Commissioner Monica Savino, who encouraged the owner to come back with a redevelopment plan “beyond the parking lot and pass-through.”The house at 615 Augusta St. was purchased in 2017 by Dr. William Gonzaba, founder of Gonzaba Medical Group and a longtime resident and property investor in the neighborhood. But it was gutted by a “horrendous fire” the following year, his attorney, Patrick Christensen, explained.
Christensen presented an engineer’s estimate that it would cost $961,559 to repair the original front portion of the house. Another case involving an aging structure at risk for demolition was postponed. An architect in the Lavaca neighborhood is seeking landmark protection for a circa-1929 commercial garage structure with a brick Mission Revival-style facade. The building, owned by Daniel Alanis, faces Florida Street and is part of Alanis Body Repair, 1422 S. St. Mary’s St., in southern downtown.
