A rare Baggy Green cap worn by Australian cricketing legend Wally Grout is being auctioned off via social media. The cap, owned by Peter Engles, was given to him decades ago by former jockey Bill Pyers. Engles hopes to sell the cap for around $26,000, a price similar to another of Grout's caps sold in 2006. The cap was worn by Grout during Australia's 1959 tour of Pakistan.

A sacred piece of Australian cricketing history is for sale. A Baggy Green cap worn by wicketkeeper Wally Grout will be sold via social media. Its current owner Peter Engles, based in Ottoway, South Australia, hopes it can fetch something like the $26,000 paid for another of the legendary wicketkeeper’s caps in 2006. The sacred Aussie sporting headwear in Engles’ possession was worn by Grout in 1959, early in his storied Test career which spanned 51 matches from 1957-1966.

He took the cap to well-known Australian sports memorabilia valuer Michael Fahey, who authenticated the item and confirmed it had been worn during the Australian team’s 1959 tour of Pakistan, when the visitors — captained by Richie Benaud — beat the home side 2-0. “At that time, there wasn’t one really a cap for sale and no one had seen one of Wally Grout’s,” Engles said. “It was only a few years after that one did turn up and go to auction, and that sold for quite a bit of money.
