Maritimo Katwinchar, the oldest boat in the Sydney Hobart yacht race history, is back for another challenge. After a successful restoration and a strong showing in 2019, the 119-year-old vessel is ready for its third attempt.

Maritimo Katwinchar , the oldest boat in the history of the Sydney Hobart yacht race, is making her third attempt. The boat, built in 1904 from timber off-cuts, was found in a dilapidated state on Gumtree and underwent a major restoration. Katwinchar , named after the three daughters of the brewery owner, has a rich history, competing in the Sydney to Hobart race since 1951.

After being sold and passed through several owners, she was rediscovered in 2015 by Bill Barry-Cotter, who led the restoration effort. In her last attempt in 2019, she placed second in the IRC Division 7, third in the veterans division, and first in the grand veterans division. For her third attempt, Katwinchar will be sailed as a double-hander by 45-time Sydney Hobart veteran Michael Spies and Peter Vaicuirgis. The boat has undergone significant modifications since her last race, including a new carbon fibre mast built by Spies himself.
