Breaking: Tony Abbott, in accepting the nation’s top civilian gong in the Queen's Birthday Honours list, has praised his government for helping prepare Australia for the coronavirus crisis | CroweDM

Mr Abbott, made a Companion of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, defended the controversial cuts by saying the country would be in a worse position today without them.

Mr Abbott restored knights and dames to the honours list in 2014 and faced a party room revolt for knighting Prince Philip. These honours were scrapped two months after he was replaced by Malcolm Turnbull in September 2015. "It caused an enormous fuss but, frankly, we’re happy enough to spend $5 on a cup of coffee, so why shouldn’t people be prepared to pay $7 to visit a GP, given that a visit to a GP is an extremely valuable service."

Those named officers of the Order of Australia include actress Robyn Nevin, Indigenous academic Marcia Langton, former Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke, economist Bruce Chapman and Catholic figure Francis Sullivan, who leads the church’s Truth, Justice and Healing Council. "There has been success recently, but that success has to be sustainable and that is one thing that I want to work on in my time."
