Hobart will host its first ever Ashes cricket Test next month after fighting off mainland rivals to be awarded the venue rights to the fifth and final match of the series.

The ABC understands the deal is done, with an official announcement expected to be made over the weekend., after Perth was deemed unable to stage the fixture due to Western Australia's strict COVID quarantine requirements. A second test at either the MCG, SCG or Adelaide Oval were options, but Cricket Australia has instead opted to play the fifth test at a fifth venue rather than double up, despite the likely extra revenue that would be generated by staging the match at a venue with a larger capacity.Hobart's Bellerive Oval, with its capacity of approximately 20,000, will hostBellerive Oval, also known as Blundstone Arena, has a capacity of about 20,000.
