Opinion: There will be blood (most of it inside the NSW parties) | AlexSmithSMH
Transport Minister David Elliott has never shied way from political fisticuffs, even if that includes landing blows on his own. His government may be under siege, but the self-appointed troublemaker has shown he is prepared to fight anyone if it gives him a chance of survival.
Not one to go quietly, Elliott has declared war. Not on Labor but on his Liberal factional nemesis Matt Kean, who beat him to the deputy party leadership. Had Elliott won that contest, it would have helped secure his future. He insists his very public criticism of the treasurer is fuelled by Kean’s meddling in the long-running dispute with the rail unions and his handling of compensation for taxi plate owners.
Others could follow, including Perrottet’s friend and one-time leadership opponent Rob Stokes. Wise heads will be lost, and there is the added pressure of finding quality candidates to replace them.Dominello says he will stay in the ministry until the election, but Perrottet will need to reshuffle his cabinet to deal with vacancies created by Petinos and former trade minister Stuart Ayres, who fell on his sword over his role in the Barilaro fiasco.
But Labor has been spooked by the disastrous federal result in Fowler, in which Cabramatta lies. Kristina Keneally was the wrong choice for Fowler, and Labor lost the once-safe seat to independent Dai Le. The party is not prepared to make the same mistake twice. That leaves three Labor MPs scrapping over two seats.
