The traditional Holden versus Ford rivalry at the Adelaide 500 is under threat following General Motors axing of the Holden brand and Ford's decision to replace the Falcon with the American-made Mustang.

Sporting Car Club of South Australia president Keith Williamson said it was very disappointing to see the demise of Holden as a retailer in Australia.

He believed there would be"derivatives of the Holden product" that would make them even"greater collectables than they are now" and agreed that the traditional Holden versus Ford rivalry at the Adelaide 500 had been delivered a knock-out blow. "We've also noticed after the recent Bathurst 12-hour race, the increased strength of the GT category."
