Tourism at Queensland island destinations and Kangaroo Island off SA are back to pre-pandemic levels.
Accommodation and ferry services at Queensland’s Fraser and Magnetic islands and South Australia’s Kangaroo Island are back to pre-pandemic levels, and holidaymakers are showing no sign of cutting back on spending in the face ofClint Feuerherdt, the chief executive of tourism and commuter bus company Kelsian, said people who had been largely confined to home for much of the first two years of the pandemic might beEmu Bay on Kangaroo Island.
“We’re not seeing any backing off. A lot of people have already sacrificed their holidays over the past two years, and they’re saying, ‘Not any more.’ ” he said. Queensland’s islands, including North Stradbroke Island, are at full strength along with Kangaroo Island off the SA coast, and travellers have taken the price rises on ferry tickets and accommodation in their stride. They just want to get out and about again.AdvertisementThe company on Wednesday announced a 40 per cent increase in net profit after tax to $52.9 million, with revenues up 12.9 per cent to $1.32 billion. It lifted its final dividend by 0.5¢ to 9.5¢.
Mr Feuerherdt said the first half of 2021-22 had been hit hard by lockdowns and COVID-19 restrictions. The omicron wave then crimped demand from January. “It wasn’t until Easter that demand started to pick up,” he said.
