Writers will be able to return to work starting Wednesday, and union members will vote on the contract’s ratification this week.
Fresh off reaching aSunday evening with major Hollywood studios and streaming services, WGA leaders had several stages of decisions before their wider membership — more than 11,000 writers — and the public could see the contract terms reached after months of haggling over such issues as better pay, transparency over streaming viewership, the size of writers’ rooms and protections from how AI will be implemented.
The WGA negotiating committee recommended the final contract Tuesday. The WGA West board and the WGA East council then approved the contract, sending it to the full membership for ratification — a process that could take days.Hollywood cannot fully resume normal operations until the AMPTP — the consortium of major studios, streamers and other production companies — reaches a deal with the actors union, SAG-AFTRA, which went on strike in July.
The settling of the WGA strike, though, paves the way for numerous reality shows and daytime chat shows to return, as well as talk shows hosted by late-night comedians. The WGA had planned to picket the Sept. 26 return of the Disney/ABC franchise “Dancing With the Stars” before reaching a deal.In the eyes of the WGA, this was far from a standard negotiation. Instead, this contract was carved out in the face of what writers have viewed as existential threats to their livelihood.
