Tony Meneses’s “The Hombres” is now running at Red Bank’s Two River Theater

The assertion encapsulates the contemplative play’s central concern about how standards of masculinity infuse society and often dictate the actions of men in troubling ways. If Beto can in fact be man enough, it follows that others could fall short of some vague masculine standard. But Meneses wonders what exactly that standard is, where it is established, and most importantly of all, from where it gets authority and influence.

Directed by Annie Tippe, the 90-minute play moves smoothly through an exploration of masculine relationships that are to various degrees hampered by social expectations of manhood. Yoga instructor Julián opens the play with a short monologue about negotiating his homosexuality from a young age, informing much of the conflicts that he will face over the course of the play.
