Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil has met with Sri Lanka’s President and Prime Minister amid the country’s ongoing economic crisis.
It comes as dozens of asylum-seekers recently intercepted on a boat bound for Australia are to return to Sri Lanka. Ms O’Neil will open a new fisheries monitoring centre today, providing maritime surveillance for Sri Lanka’s fishing fleet. Trawlers are commonly the boat of choice for people smugglers attempting to transport asylum seekers to Australia.
