The NT Chief Minister says an NT-wide vaccination rate of 80 per cent could usher in the end of mandatory supervised quarantine, as the teacher's union flags a potential exodus of remote teachers if they aren't permitted freer travel.
Australian Education Union NT branch president Jarvis Ryan has flagged concerns over a potential mass exodus of remote teachers unless they were allowed to travel home for Christmas without the risk of mandatory quarantine.
"Our members out bush have been doing it pretty tough for the past 18 months, they've been very isolated," he said."A lot of people have not really been able to go interstate for 18 months or if they do, they're facing the prospect of 14 days quarantine on their return." Mr Ryan is calling for fully vaccinated teachers to be able to self-quarantine at home or given the green light to travel freely if they commit to frequent COVID-19 testing. He said the government needed to commit to allowing more relaxed restrictions before teachers started planning their Christmas holidays.
"The worry is we get to the point where people go: 'you know what, as much as I love my job and what I do, this is becoming too much of an ask'," he said. Mr Ryan says teachers may leave the NT for good if they can not visit family without supervised quarantine.Mr Gunner said although he empathised with remote workers, his government hadn't seen any indication of a looming exodus.
