Recent reports of anti-social behaviour, and a stabbing, has led Northern Beaches Council to plan to end the Dee Why dunes camp.
A campsite of homeless people in a million-dollar suburb could be dismantled for the second time in a year, following a stabbing incident last weekend.
The man was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable but serious condition and detectives are waiting to speak with him to clarify the circumstances leading up to the incident. The council instigated a program to rehabilitate the area when the campsite was previously dismantled, but the business papers allege that significant damage has occurred with the re-erection.
Walton said council staff were concerned about the ramifications of trees being chopped down by those at the campsite, which can destabilise dunes. “Historically, there have been many different hotspots for people sleeping rough on the Northern Beaches, which Mission Australia has responded to,” he said, confirming they had visited these spots and offered options for support.
Local affordable housing service Bridge Housing annual Northern Beaches Homeless Street Sleeping Count found there were 45 people sleeping rough, either outside or in cars, in the council area earlier this year, an increase from 30 in 2022, although it was a one-third decrease on 2020 numbers.
