After his Splendour in the Grass appearance was washed away, this free show at the Enmore Theatre was a triumphant hometown return for Ruel after more than two years. The intimate set was as electric as the blue suit he wore and the Sydney singer-songwriter established a self-assured groove from openerUninhibited in delivering his planned Splendour set in its entirety - production and all - it’s easy to forget that Ruel is just 19.
The heavily skewed Gen Z crowd exuded fervent energy, even when singing along to vulnerable lyrics exploring the messiness and complexities of growing up. Bolstered by his proficient band, the set continuously reached great heights, although it did fall slightly short in the delivery of new work, including a false start on the first live run of his latest single
