Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam oversaw Monday's ceremony, which saw 90 newly elected politicians take their oaths under China's national emblem. The emblem replaced the city's traditional insignia in line with the National Flag and National Emblem Ordinance, which mandated its display for the swearing-in of officials.
Most took their oaths in Cantonese, the version of Chinese that is commonly and officially used in Hong Kong. For the first time, three elected officials made their pledges in Mandarin — the version of Chinese officially used in mainland China, but not Hong Kong.in May 2021, which included reducing the number of directly elected seats and requiring all candidates to be vetted by a largely pro-Beijing committee., having faced a boycott after the changes that were labelled undemocratic by critics.
