On Friday night, the Hooper Bay sewer lagoon breached and spilled out into the surrounding wetlands, prompting an emergency meeting of the Hooper Bay City Council, according to Mayor Sandra Hill.
HOOPER BAY, Alaska -
“The lagoon is situated north of our village 500-700 feet north,” Hill said on Saturday. “It didn’t leak into our village directly, but the tundra surrounding it and I’m worried about food security because we have a slough just below where the lagoon is located where we fish.” “We’re thinking it was the permafrost underneath melted and unstabilzed the lagoon itself,” Hill said.
