While many will enjoy a 10-day holiday across Easter and Anzac Day this year, up to half a million hospitality and retail workers aren't celebrating
Public holiday penalties for retail and hospitality workers were reduced from double-time and one-half to double-time and one-quarter.James, a 19-year-old hospitality worker and member of United Voice said he received no penalty rates for weekend work and public holidays in the four years he worked for a fast food outlet and a restaurant. After spending the money he saved to go on an overseas holiday last year, he found a job last October that pays him legal award wages, including penalty rates.
Dr Stanford said when penalty rate reductions are fully implemented after 2020, the cumulative loss for a similar 10-day holiday period would equal $107 million. The report, seized on by United Voice, the union representing affected workers, rejected arguments by business groups that penalty rate cuts would lead to greater job creation.
Federal Labor has made a commitment to restore penalty rates if it wins government at next month's election.
