When this Hobart hotel was doing its refurbishment, it knew it didn't want all the old furniture to end up in landfill. Now, it's helping create a cosy home for women at risk of homelessness.
Furniture no longer needed at a Hobart hotel is now getting a new life at a transitionary housing for vulnerable women, after a donation from a local business.Tasmanian hotel Somerset on the Pier has donated a swathe of furniture, including beds, kitchen equipment and office furnishings, to a new transitional housing facility, saving the service provider half a million dollars. The transitional housing is being run in partnership between Hobart City Mission and the St Vincent de Paul Society .
Tasmania is in the throes of a housing crisis, and women and children are particularly vulnerable, according to a recent report. Shanna Sweeny, general manager of Somerset on the Pier Hotel and Anthea Dimitrakopoulos GM, Brand and ESG, Ascott Limited say the donation was an easy decision."In our roles, it's about doing better and doing good."
Amelie House has also been significantly supported through help from the Neill family's Select Foundation, which previously funded the purchase of the 18 self-contained accommodation pods at the rear of the building, to keep them as permanent housing stock. "Vinnies relies on 10, 000 people to be able to bring up the same amount of money that Bruce's foundation has delivered."
Meanwhile, a 2023 economic report, commissioned by the government and produced by Hobart Women's Shelter in partnership with Shelter Tasmania, estimated that approximately 604 Tasmanian women were becoming homeless each year after leaving a violent partner, while 333 were returning to one. Government MP Simon Behrakis said the government was committed to its pledge to build 10,000 social and affordable homes.
