The state's hotel quarantine program has been blamed for Victoria's second wave but Maree White, who worked as a nurse during quarantine at the Marriot, wants to talk about what went right.
Ms White said the Department of Health and Human Services provided information on the correct use of personal protective equipment , but it was the nurses at her hotel who conducted training.Suspected cases of community transmission where the source is unknown: 4,223Active cases in healthcare workers: 411Tests since pandemic began: More than 2.
"We had a green zone and a red zone, and the staff and management and security and kitchen staff were all very well versed on the appropriate places to wear the PPE and where to doff it on a regular basis." She said they did have enough PPE, and staff were good at utilising it appropriately under her watch. While some hotel guests had complex needs, Mrs White said staff did their best to help them and, at the end of the first period of two-week isolation, the guests gave all the hotel staff a round of applause from their doorways.
"Any of these issues that may have developed could have happened with anybody, I just feel that possibly they weren't guided or trained well enough," she said. She said the nurses would call the guests every day and sometimes there were challenges, but her experience of working on the program was a good one.
"It was a really positive experience and I believe a lot of it had to do with consistency of staff, diligence with PPE and just a really good team," she said.An inquiry into the hotel quarantine failures, led by former judge Jennifer Coate, has been running for a fortnight and continues on Monday.
