HouseOfTheDragon's Paddy Considine knows the moment Viserys gave up on living 👀 'From the minute of his wife’s funeral, I think Viserys starts to die. It’s a slow death. Nowhere in the story does Viserys ask the maesters to cure him...' 😮😢

House of the Dragon star Paddy Considine reveals the moment that King Viserys gave up on life. Beginning nine years into his reign, House of the Dragon episode 1 finds King Viserys desperate to secure a male heir as he makes the heartbreaking decision to order a cesarean section be performed on Queen Aemma, which ends up killing his wife and fails to save his newborn son, Baelon.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Early on in House of the Dragon, a mysterious illness begins eating away at Viserys, with Considine revealing the disease is actually "a form of leprosy." After multiple time jumps, House of the Dragon episode 8, "Lord of the Tides," reveals the King's health has declined rapidly. He is bedridden, missing an eye, and highly sedated on Milk of the Poppy, which muddles his mind.

From the minute of his wife’s funeral, I think Viserys starts to die. It’s a slow death. Nowhere in the story does Viserys ask the maesters to cure him, to stop this thing from eating him alive. I think he accepts it as part of the guilt of the decision he makes to put his wife through a terrible, horrible procedure. It’s like people who surrender to illness. When they offer suggestions to cure him, he doesn’t bother with it. He lets it consume him. He surrenders.

Aemma's Death Is What Truly Caused Viserys' Demise In House of the Dragon episode 1, Viserys cuts himself on the Iron Throne, which appears to actually be the moment the King's mysterious skin infection began. More important than the actual disease ailing Viserys is what the sickness symbolizes, and Considine's comments get to the heart of that question.

According to the actor, Viserys' demise begins at Aemma's funeral, and his skin-eating sickness is an extension of the guilt he feels over his wife's death. Though he accepts treatment, he never urges the maesters to heal him, as Considine points out, instead surrendering to the slow and agonizing death as punishment for putting his beloved wife through a painful and fatal procedure.
