Civil war is the only option for the Targaryen dynasty

to return, but its second series wastes no time in getting down to business. Infanticide, cunnilingus, dead dragons, warmongering and, er, arguments over sheep are par the course in this pacy, guileful hour of television.’s fiery finale, following the exploits of the Targaryen family – owners of dragons and rulers of Westeros – as they barrel towards the civil war that will bring down their entire dynasty.

At the end of that first series, the death of King Viserys Targaryen left Westeros with a power vacuum. Despite declaring his daughter Rhaenyra as heir, on his deathbed Viserys told his wife – Rhaenyra’s former best friend, Alicent – that he wanted their son Aegon to take the fabled Iron Throne. Or did he? Rhaenyra certainly thinks not and is ready to unleash hell to prove herself right.

But now, with the pressure of living up to the original now shaken off, it’s getting comfortable in its own style: polished, verbose – and with a hell of a lot more dragons, once a special treat in. If that first series was merely the warm-up, then this second feels like the whistle has just blown on the main event.
