One House of the Dragon star has officially confirmed that they will not be returning for season 2. The series, which is a prequel to Game of Thrones following the fall of the Targaryen dynasty, was renewed for a second season just five days after its initial premiere in August 2022. Considering how many years of history the run of season 1 spanned, the question remains as to how many cast members will still be around when the impending season 2 pushes even further into the future.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Recently, Deadline had the opportunity to sit down with for a candid interview with Milly Alcock, who plays the younger version of Emma D'Arcy's Rhaenyra Targaryen. Considering the fact that she has just signed on to star in the upcoming production of The Crucible at London’s National Theatre, she was asked if there was a chance she would return in the impending House of the Dragon season 2. She confirmed resolutely that "No. It's done.
With season 2 firmly set in the time period of the grown-up Rhaenyra and Alicent , it seems unlikely that any of them will return in major roles. However, there is still the possibility of one or more of them returning in flashbacks in some form. This seems unlikely, though, given the fact that the younger version of one of the House of the Dragon leads is not returning, it seems less likely that any other characters will be seen in flashbacks either.
Most of the younger actors are not officially signed on to other upcoming projects. The only exceptions are Alcock and Carey, the latter of whom will be appearing in the upcoming titles Platform 7 and The Canterville Ghost. This wider availability may allow some of them to appear in more House of the Dragon should the producers discover a need for them while filming.
