House of the Dragon star Paddy Considine reflects on the real-life experiences that made King Viserys' health deterioration particularly emotional. Serving as a prequel to HBO's wildly successful Game of Thrones, the network's latest fantasy series chronicles the onset of the Targaryen civil war, nearly 200 years before the birth of Danaerys .
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While Viserys' diseased appearance in House of the Dragon was difficult for many fans to watch, particularly during the character's last episode, Considine reveals in a recent appearance on The Adam Buxton Podcast that a tragic real-world parallel made the experience especially emotional for him.
"I didn’t watch episode eight, but my wife had watched it, and my daughter, and they were pretty upset with it. My wife said, 'Just watch the end.' Years ago, I’d watched my dad die of cancer and he just went downhill rapidly from being diagnosed to being on death's door. You know, he became skeletal so rapidly.
Viserys' final mistake, in many ways, caused the onset of one of the most contentious and violent periods in the history of the Targaryen family. House of the Dragon season 2 is sure to see the relationship between Rhaenyra and Alicent further deteriorate, but a particular moment during season 1, episode 8, suggests that, deep down, the characters still share a mutual understanding.
Although Viserys' role on House of the Dragon is at an end, his legacy will live on. This legacy is one of failure but also one of unwavering devotion to family and peace. Considine's character may have been unsuccessful at stopping a war between his wife and his daughter, but he never stopped trying, an effort that both Alicent and Rheanya may continue to carry with them.
