House Republicans are holding a conference call at 10:15 a.m. to discuss a potential deal between GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and a group of his defectors as he continues to struggle to lock down the 218 votes needed to take the gavel.
A sizable group of members expressed frustrations that the full conference had not met since Tuesday morning to discuss a path forward as McCarthy fell short on a 11th ballot.
McCarthy allies said they are optimistic the additional concessions will gain him a handful of votes, with allowing a single member to force a vote to oust a sitting speaker, changes to the Rules Committee to allow for more conservatives to sit on the powerful panel, and promises to bring up certain bills set to be discussed on Friday.Multiple GOP lawmakers said they feel the meeting should be held in person.
The chamber is set to hit its fourth day of having no speaker, with a growing number of members worried about the impact it could have on the country if the floor battle continues to drag on.
