House Speaker Dade Phelan opposes Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick's call to ban tenure at Texas universities
The Texas Speaker of the House of Representatives Dade Phelan speaks to other legislators after quickly adjourning the first day of the second special session called by Governor Greg Abbott on Saturday, August 7, 2021 in Austin, Tx., U.S.Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan on Friday said he opposes Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick’sat public universities, saying the idea would work against Republican interests by making it “hard to recruit conservative professors.
“I can just tell you, in my time talking to folks at the University of Texas, they’ll tell you it’s hard to recruit conservative professors without tenure,” said Phelan, a Republican from Beaumont. Patrick, the Republican who oversees the Texas Senate, announced in February that he wants to end eligibility for tenure for all new hires at public universities. He says the practice grants professors job security that allows them to embrace critical race theory — an academic movement used as a buzzword among Republicans who seek to rid public schools of teachings on the existence of white privilege and systemic racism in society.
