Households could be given £10 every day for using energy off-peak under new scheme
A brand new scheme could see Brits rewarded with cash for running their washing machine late at night.
The money-back offer will be monitored using a smart meter and is to be implemented by energy suppliers. A minimum of £10 per day will be awarded to people who prioritise off-peak electricity usage. Avoiding running electricity-guzzling kitchen appliances through the day, or charging an electric vehicle at night, could be ways of meeting the target for households. The service is scheduled to run from November to March, and has been promoted as an innovative step towards a more "flexible" energy system, reports the Mail Online.
It comes as households are potentially facing organised power cuts of around three hours in the months ahead due to possible shortages of foreign gas caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Presenting a 'worst case scenario', The National Grid raised the prospect of scheduled blackouts between 4pm and 7pm if there is not enough gas to keep the country’s power stations going.
